Standardized Extracts
Standardized medical cannabis extracts are preparations defined by documented quality attributes and, where applicable, a stated level or range of one or more constituents. For qualified buyers, the key question is what has been standardized, how that content is measured and whether the preparation fits the intended technical and regulatory requirements.
The term “standardized extract” should match the approved product definition and supporting manufacturing records. Depending on the preparation, relevant information may include botanical identity, extract type, declared cannabinoid content and the constituent or constituents used for standardization. Do not assume that products described with the same general name have equivalent composition, quality attributes or permitted uses.
If you are assessing a preparation for formulation, manufacturing, pharmacy or research use, request the current product specification and the batch and quality records available for that specific grade. Any statement about EU GMP must be supported by current evidence that is relevant to the site, activities, product and supply chain in question.
Specifications
The approved specification is the starting point for a technical assessment. It should identify the preparation, define relevant quality attributes and state the applicable test methods and acceptance criteria. Buyers should compare the documented requirements with their own quality needs and intended use.
Depending on the specific product, technical documentation may describe the botanical source and plant parts, chemotype, extraction method or solvent, drug-to-extract ratio, physical form, declared THC and/or CBD content, other specified constituents, and any carrier or excipient used in the formulation. It may also address identity, assay, impurities, residual solvents, contaminants, microbiological quality, packaging and storage. Include only characteristics confirmed in the current product records.
Standardized preparations can differ in composition, concentration, formulation and manufacturing process. Assess each grade against its own specification and supporting evidence; do not infer content, quality or suitability from the product category alone.

Specification and Certificate of Analysis (CoA)
The product specification describes the requirements a preparation is expected to meet. A Certificate of Analysis (CoA), where available, reports analytical results for a particular batch. Reviewing the matching specification and batch CoA together helps buyers assess reported results against the stated acceptance criteria.
Request the Current Product Specification
Request the current approved specification and relevant analytical methods, where available. Check that the grade name, document version, test panel and acceptance limits correspond to the material being offered and are suitable for the requirements of the intended application and destination market.
What Does a Standardized Extract CoA Show?
A batch CoA records test results for an identified lot. The exact content depends on the product specification and the agreed testing programme. Depending on the preparation, the report may include:
Material identity, preparation type and grade
Batch or lot number for traceability
Manufacturer and relevant production identifiers
Manufacturing date, where recorded
Retest or expiry date, where assigned
Specification reference and analytical method
Identity result and measured level of the constituent(s) used for standardization
THC, CBD or other cannabinoid results, where included in the test panel
Purity, related substances and specified impurities
Residual solvents and other relevant contaminants, where tested
Other tests required by the approved specification
Batch release or disposition information, where applicable and recorded
A CoA does not necessarily report every possible quality attribute. Compare the results with the corresponding specification and confirm that the reported tests address the needs of your proposed use.
How CoA Results Support Supplier Assessment
A CoA supports batch review, but does not by itself prove EU GMP compliance, establish legal permission to supply or confirm suitability for every application. Those questions require separate evidence and a review of the applicable requirements. When requesting documentation, identify the preparation, proposed use and destination market.
Manufacturing Quality and EU GMP Evidence
Reviewing EU GMP and Quality-System Documentation
The quality requirements that apply depend on the product classification, manufacturing activities and intended supply route. Buyers considering a preparation for a regulated medicinal-product process should establish which requirements apply to their specific use and jurisdiction.
Before relying on an EU GMP statement, check current evidence for the relevant site, activities, product scope and supply-chain operations. A batch CoA, general quality statement or certificate for a different site or activity is not sufficient on its own to demonstrate that the preparation under review is covered.
Documents That May Support a Quality Review
Relevant GMP certificate or other applicable quality-system evidence, where available
Botanical-material source and relevant manufacturing locations
Current approved specification for the specific preparation
Batch-specific CoA or analytical report, where available
Batch identification and traceability records
Documented extraction and standardization controls, where available
Quality agreement or other defined responsibilities document, where appropriate
Supplier qualification and change-control information, where relevant
Documented storage, handling, packaging and transport conditions
Product classification and restrictions that apply to the intended use
Review each document for validity, scope and relevance to the exact preparation and supply arrangement. The presence of a certificate or record does not automatically establish that it covers every product or operation.
Standardized Extracts for Pharmacies, Manufacturers and Research Organisations
Pharmacies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, formulation teams, distributors and research organisations may require different evidence. Start with the intended application, then assess the preparation against the quality, documentation and regulatory requirements relevant to that use.
Depending on the project, useful information may include the approved specification, declared constituent content, physical form, extraction and standardization details, excipient information, batch results, applicable quality-system evidence, storage guidance, packaging details and supply conditions. The records available should be confirmed for the specific grade.
Standardized Extracts as Ingredients
Where permitted by the applicable rules, a standardized cannabis extract may be evaluated for a defined pharmaceutical development or manufacturing role. This does not mean that every extract is suitable for use as an ingredient or starting material. Suitability depends on identity, composition, manufacturing controls, supporting data and the requirements of the intended product.
Review botanical identity, declared THC and/or CBD content, relevant cannabinoid-profile data, extraction and standardization information, excipients and applicable analytical results. Consider batch traceability, stability data and storage conditions where available. Confirm regulatory requirements separately for the planned application and destination market.
Assessing a Standardized Extract
Product identity: confirm the preparation and grade are clearly defined
Specification: review current acceptance criteria and analytical methods
Standardized content: check the declared constituent(s), units and range, where applicable
Manufacturing information: review documented extraction method and physical form
Standardization: establish what is controlled and how this is documented
Excipients: confirm whether carriers or other excipients are present and specified
Impurities: review the residual-solvent, contaminant and impurity tests relevant to the product
Quality evidence: confirm that supporting documents apply to the relevant site, activity and material
Traceability and stability: review batch identifiers and any assigned retest or expiry information
Regulatory requirements: confirm the preparation and proposed use are permitted in the destination market
Commercial terms: confirm available pack formats, lead times and supply conditions
Supply Enquiries for Qualified Buyers
Subject to confirmed availability, qualified customers can enquire about:
Standardized extract grades and their current approved specifications
Declared constituent levels and related analytical information, where available
Batch CoAs and supporting technical records, where available
Documented manufacturing and standardization controls
Confirmed packaging formats for the selected preparation
Current supply status, lead times and quotation details
Product-specific questions about composition, quality attributes and destination-market requirements
Request Product and Batch Documentation
To help us respond to your enquiry, provide your organisation type, intended application, preparation or target constituent profile, approximate quantity, destination market and the documents you need to review. Product availability, packaging and documentation should be confirmed for the specific grade rather than assumed.
